The Pi-eX AMI sees an upturn in December 2020 but overall yearly results are down 30%

Posted by Pi-eX Research on 9th Jan 2021

December 2020 saw a predictable increase (+12%) in the Pi-eX AMI vs previous month, from $6.535b in November to $7.291b in December. This brings the Pi-eX AMI 30% down versus a year ago, showing a fall of over US$3 billion in trading at the top three auction houses between 2019 and 2020

- The growth in the Pi-eX AMI in December was driven mostly by the late timing of both Christie’s Hong Kong sales and Phillips’ New York MEGA sales, as well as a second round of the New York MEGA sales auctions at Christie’s and Sotheby’s

- Revenue from traditional key December sales in Paris, London and New York showed a combined decline of almost 20% in December 2020

- Additional revenue for the last month of the year came from the programming of new auctions focusing on furniture, wine & Spirits, and watches
